London, England - Tour Blog #4

London is a city like no other. The crowded city streets, the fish & chip shops, the taxis, the tube, the fluffy haired guy singing Nirvana in a British accent at the open mic, snooty business men in suits checking the stock markets on the train, noisy pubs, bad beer, iconic landmarks, and tea and crumpets. The list could go on and on. I have been staying in London for over a week now and this is the longest I've stayed in any one place for the duration of the tour, which has been two months long to date. I have played two open mics and one show at the Regal Room so far since my bus ride into London from Scotland and I have one more show to finish off the tour at the 12 Bar in Soho. I had the pleasure of performing at an open mic at the Spice of Life (also in Soho) where Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, and the Sex Pistols along with many other famous acts have played. The crowds have been good to me here, but you might say they are more interested in buying beer than in buying music.

I have been able to do some site seeing while I've been here which has included, Big Ben, the British Parliament, Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, and Abbey Road as you can see in the photographs below.

Tomorrow I plan to visit the National Gallery where they have paintings by Monet, Van Gogh, and Leonardo Da Vinci. It has been an awesome experience traveling over seas for the past two months and performing in Europe. As much as my blog might make touring seem glamorous it has been difficult to be away from my own country for so long. I sympathize with those who have lived over seas (most much longer than I have) and will admit that I do miss my home. It will be nice to be back in the states and to do my laundry.

Milan, Italy - Tour Blog #3

After 22 shows with only a few days off, this part of the tour is about to come to a close and then it is on to the UK. I am now in Milan, Italy staying with my friend here named Matteo. It is good to have some down time filled with sight seeing, food, wine, and ice cream (the ice cream and wine are amazing here!). Tomorrow we will play a show in Vigevano, Italy with a local Italian acoustic duo and I am looking forward to hearing some local music (other than the buskers I have seen which usually play accordian here). To be honest I never thought I would get the chance to perform in Italy so I am very excited to be here as it is not usually a tour stop for most North American musicians.

While in Milan I went to see the Duomo di Milano which is the second largest cathedral in the world and took over 500 years to build. It is a breathtaking site inside and out! You can see a photo of it above. They began construction on the cathedral back in 1386 and it was not completed until 1865 when Napolean ordered it to be finished. The last details of the cathedral were finished only in the 20th century when the last gate was inaugurated in 1965. It is crazy to think about how long people were working on this building.

I only know a few words in Italian, less words than I know in German. Basically I only know enough to order my food, ask for the bill, and say thank you, "grazie" (pronounced grah-tsee-ay). Today I bought a post card in a tourist shop where I was in line with a bunch of Americans and other tourists. The man working there spoke English and I heard an older woman say "gracias" after paying for her things. I just laughed. It's no wonder why people in other countries don't like Americans and think they are arrogant. You shouldn't assume that other people just speak your language and when you attempt to speak the language of the country you are in, be informed enough to get the words right.

Though it has been an amazing experience coming to Italy, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, and Austria I am looking forward to going to an English speaking country as I am starved for conversation with people that speak English as their first language. But I am thankful for the many friends I have met along the way that have spoken wonderful English with me. Thanks again to all the people that have housed me or fed me along the way. Show tomorrow, then a few more days of site seeing here in Italy and then I will catch a plane to Scotland. I'm looking forward to what I will find there.

Frankfurt, Germany - Tour Blog #2

I write to you from Frankfurt, Germany where we have a day off from tour and are staying with a good friend just outside the city limits. Tour has been going well with 14 shows in a row played thus far. The crowds have been wonderful and very attentive. People actually care about hearing original music here. They are also not talking during the performances (like many people do in the US) so this has made it a very different experience to play shows here. Thanks to everyone that has come out to see me perform so far!

Frankfurt is the only Germany city with a skyline similar to that of a US city. Most of the tall buildings that you see in the photo above are actually banking institutions. Berlin and most of the other German cities have no skyline and have beautiful older buildings that can be seen. Viewing Frankfurt from my friend K-Pete's house definitely reminds me of home a bit. Unfortunately my digital camera has stopped working and I am now only using my grandpa's old Cannon 35mm camera to take photos so the photo pictured above was not taken by myself.

We had one of our longest drives yesterday from Hamburg to Tubingen which was about 7 hours and then we drove north to Frankfurt which was another 2 hours. Most of the drives have been short though with only 3 or 4 hours in between cities. I have been doing most of the driving on the autobahn in our Opel rental car. Most of the time people are driving at speeds of over 150 kph (93.2 mph) and above so this can make for an interesting drive. Usually I am keeping it around 120 kph though as this is the average speed on the autobahn. We have about nine more shows to go on this part of the tour and then we will be taking a break in Italy and heading to the UK. There has been a lot of traveling involved on this trip (planes, trains, and automobiles) and I am grateful to have come here. It seems once again the open road has become my home.

Tour Blog #1 - Copenhagen, Denmark

I have arrived safely in Europe flying from Chicago, IL to Reykjavik, Iceland and then on to Copenhagen, Denmark. It was a nine hour bus ride from Omaha to Chicago and then around eight to nine hours spent in the air. After a little turbulence, a stamp on my passport, and a sleepless night we arrived at the Copenhagen airport. We toted our heavy bags, guitar, and banjo down to the metro station where we were greeted with the chatter of a very large crowd, all heading toward the Danish capitol. On what seemed to be a futuristic metro train I heard many different languages being spoken around me all at once. I had arrived. I had finally left North America. It felt a weight being lifted off my chest.

After calling our couch surfing hosts from a pay phone in the city center we proceeded to walk to their house, pulling our suitcases down the street with us, Amy with her guitar on her back and I with banjo in hand. Bikes and cars whizzed past as we made our way through the busy Copenhagen streets. The air was fresh outside as I breathed it in. The clouds hung overhead on what appeared to be a dreary day as rain softly fell down. I stopped for a second, trying to catch my breath from all the walking.

We finally made it to Joesph and Lindsay's house where we would be staying for a few days and I was overjoyed to not be hauling my heavy bag up and down stairs and across crowded streets anymore. Jet lag soon settled in and the both of us went to sleep only a few hours after our arrival. Amy on the couch and I on the floor, laying upon a small pad our hosts provided us with. Tomorrow we would hit the town.

The city of bikes, that's what Copenhagen is. I found out that one third of the population of Copenhagen ride their bikes to work. Everyone is on a bike here. They even have bike lanes almost as large as a lane for a car on almost every street I have been on. We can definitely learn something from the Danish, and as far as I am concerned they are way ahead of us as far as "going green".

We walked a lot on our first two days in Denmark, seeing old buildings, the Rosenborg Castle, several old churches, and a museum with old Egyptian and Roman artifacts in it which can be viewed in the photographs below. It's hard to sum up all I have seen in the past few days. It's truly an amazing place. We perform at a venue called Tjili Pop on Wednesday here in the city. I can't wait to get this tour started. Soon enough we will be in Germany.

A Note from the Road

I have been traveling up the west coast this October on tour and I am currently in Portland, Oregon. I enjoy being in the northwest again with it's clean air, evergreens, and great people. I will be playing a free show at the Camellia Lounge tonight and then I will be off to Olympia, Washington and Seattle as well. I have lived in the Seattle area before and it's always great to come back and visit. I will be performing with Tin Can Tobacco Band and Paul Mauer at the Rendezvous Jewel Box Theatre in Seattle this Sunday, Oct. 10th. I hope those of you that live in the northwest can make it. I'll be headed back to the midwest again for my first home show in 3 months at the Waiting Room in Omaha, Nebraska opening up for Mae, Terrible Things, and Windsor Drive. This will be a show you won't want to miss and I will have my full band playing with me as well. Thanks to all the people along the way that have came out to a show, bought a CD, given me a place to stay or bought me a drink. You are the ones that make all of my traveling possible!

Sorry for my lack of updates on here. Tour went well and I am now back home in Nebraska playing local shows. While I was in Seattle, Washington I recorded my newest effort entitled "Freedom Lost or Freedom Found". The new EP is 5 tracks and you can hear one of the songs by going to my myspace page at www.myspace.com/orionwalsh. I plan on a summer release for the EP. In other news, I have just been confirmed on this year's Cornerstone Festival 2009 and will be playing on the Gallery Stage on July 2nd.
